Additional Educational Needs (AEN)

Welcome to the EBS Additional Educational Needs Faculty! We hope to provide you with all the information you need about this faculty, but if you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our Faculty strives to ensure that the Additional Educational Needs of all our students are met. We provide support to students with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and students with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Working with students who have an EHCP and those with SEN. We aim to promote the opportunities and achievements of all in line with our whole school ethos. Liaison with staff and knowing our students is essential and with this in mind we aim to meet with all SEND students before they join East Barnet in order to facilitate a successful transition to Secondary School.

Our Faculty is made up of 20+ members of staff including four AEN teachers. We work closely with the wider network including Inclusion Advisory team and the Autism Advisory team, we have regular visits from the Visual Impairment and Hearing Impairment advisors and from the Educational Psychologist. We have close relationships with CAMHs and other support practitioners from the local authority.

All local authorities have information on what provision they expect to be available to children with SEND.

How are we physically accessible for students?

  • There are disabled parking bays in the car park.
  • The school is on four floors with a lift providing access to all floors.
  • There are disabled toilets on all floors.
  • After school and extra-curricular provision is accessible to all children including those with SEN.
  • All students have an equal opportunity to go on school visits. If needed, extra support is provided.

Additional Education Needs Tour

This video was made for our new Year 7s, but it gives a great overview of the department for all students.

Video Transcript

Hello, my name is Mrs Brennan and I’m the SENCo at East Barnet School. I lead a team, a large team, of 17 Learning Support staff who work with students throughout the day.

Some, but not all, support is carried out in class. Some is one-to-one, some is before school, doing reading, writing, spelling. We do some travel training. We do quite a lot that’s slightly different to the normal curriculum.

I’d like to introduce you to four members of my team:

Hi Year 7, my name is Mrs Falco. I really cannot wait to meet you all properly in September. I’m here to help. If you need any help with anything, myself and my colleagues are here to help you. But I specifically help children with visual impairment, hearing impairment or physical disability. But, as I said I’m here to help all of you. Can’t wait to see you in September. Bye!

Hello, I’m Mrs Hone and I’m a higher-level Teaching Assistant and I work mainly with the ADHD children, and I’ve been here 11 years.

Good afternoon, my name’s Elizabeth Tzouliou and I’m a higher-level TA at East Barnet School. I specialise in helping children that are on the autistic spectrum and i can’t wait to meet you all. See you in September. Bye!

Hi Year 7 and welcome to East Barnet School. My name is Mrs Brady and I work with students who need support with their speech, language and communication skills. I’m really looking forward to meeting you in September, and I hope you all have a lovely, lovely summer. Bye!

We are a busy team and we are usually found in room 104. 104 can be easily found. So, when you arrive in school, you come down the long staircase, come all the way to the bottom, all the way to the bottom, and we are on the left-hand side, just before you go out into the playground.

This is room 104.

We have lessons in 104, but we also have Lunch Club. You’re very welcome to come to Lunch Club. We sometimes have games, we have Lego, we have chess, and sometimes the students bring hand-held computer games to play, maybe once a week.

The other room I’d like to show you is next door. Sometimes students find it very difficult to stay in class. They might have had a falling out, or an argument or, finding

life a little difficult, or a little challenging, and we bring them down into the PDC where they can have a bit of timeout and some discussion with staff and time to regroup before they go back into lessons. This is the social, Emotional Hub.

Don’t forget to come and find us either in room 104, or in here when you’re next in school.

Admissions for AEN Students

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), arrangements for your child’s secondary transfer or in-year admission will be processed by the London Borough of Barnet SEN Team. The EHCP replaces the Statement of Special Educational Needs. For more information contact SENadmin@barnet.gov.uk.

If East Barnet School is seen as a viable option for your child, we will invite the family to the school to meet with our SENCO to ensure we have the correct support in place before your child starts.

The school is fully accessible for students with physical disabilities.

How do we include SEN students?

Our students are part of the whole school community, they are valued and valuable, they have a voice. They have access to a full range of activities, trips and extension opportunities. All students are encouraged to be part of the Student Voice and contribute to whole school initiatives and change.

Underpinning ALL our provision in school is the graduated approach cycle of Assess, Plan, Do and Review.

All teachers are responsible for every child in their care, including those with special educational needs. Throughout their school career students are assessed, work is planned and once completed the review of this leads to further planning and progress towards outcomes.

We will always do all that we can to ensure students are not excluded from any part of school life, whether that is in the classroom or through extra-curricular activities. Previously we have adapted seating plans for those students who are hard of hearing, visually impaired or are struggling emotionally; utilised wireless microphones for those hard of hearing, provided electronic tablets to help the visually impaired; and created cards to allow students to take a break from the classroom. If students wish to take part in any activity that may be a physical or emotional challenge, they are encouraged to speak to the SEN Team who will always find a solution.

How do we nurture our relationship with Parents/Carers?

We understand that Parents/Carers are best placed to understand the needs of their child and therefore having a positive, workable relationship between school and home is really important to us. Involving parents and learners in the dialogue is central to our approach, a few examples of how we do this are through:

  • Telephone conversations/face to face meeting/on-line;
  • Consultation Evenings;
  • Student Interviews;
  • EHCP Annual Reviews;
  • Learning Support Plans/Passports;
  • Round table meetings;
  • Behaviour Management Plans, Pastoral Support Plans.

More details of our approach can be found in our most recent SEND Report on this page.

More AEN Information

Identifying Students' Needs

Information from students, parents, primary schools and teachers help us to decide on the level of support needed.

Delivering Support

Students are supported in curriculum lessons by Learning Support Assistants and our EAL Coordinator. Learning Support Teachers withdraw students for 1:1 work or to work in small groups and provide Literacy support in Years 7 and 8. They also team teach English and Maths in Year 7 and take Learning Support lessons in Years 10 and 11.

Exam Support

Students are assessed at the end of Year 9 to see if they meet the strict criteria for access arrangements. Applications are then made to the Examining Boards and students are informed by letter if their applications are successful.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Homework clubs and break time and lunch clubs provide times for socialising and accessing support.
