 Governing Body Committees

East Barnet Governing Body divides its responsibilities across several committees. This is where the majority of the planning, scrutiny and decision making takes place.

In addition, there are a number of areas for which individual governors take responsibility.

All committees and individual governors report back to the Full Governing Body for final agreement and approval of policies or major decisions.

The Curriculum Committee makes sure that the National Curriculum is delivered in the school. It reviews the provision of sex education, religious education, collective worship and special needs. It checks on the performance of the school in terms of pupil achievement and develops and proposes strategies for efficient utilisation of resources. The committee suggests ideas for the development of the curriculum with regard to the School Development Plan and oversees implementation of the Equal Opportunities Policy. Liaises with the school's Numeracy and Literacy co-ordinators.

It is the responsibility of the Finance Committee to ensure that the school remains within the budget limits agreed by the full Governing Body, to review all funding, to ensure that the school's financial practices comply with audit requirements and to check that the school is not exposed to any unnecessary financial risk.

It is the responsibility of the Personnel Committee to ensure professional duties are fulfilled by teaching staff as specified in the terms and conditions of service and that there is equality of opportunity for all. It assists in the recruitment, development and deployment of teaching and non-teaching staff to ensure effective education and learning throughout the school. This committee also makes sure there are effective systems in place for the management of staff performance, appraisal and target setting, as well as for staff training and development. The school staffing plan is discussed and approved by the committee. A governor from this committee sits on the interview panel for all appointments and promotions at Head of Department level or above and at senior non-teaching appointments.  The Personnel Committee ensures compliance with the school policy on staff grievance and disciplinary matters. It reviews the Headteacher's salary and considers the Head's recommendations about the Deputy Headteacher's salary.

The Premises committee develops a long-term building and accommodation strategy for the school, as well as maintaining and developing the current school accommodation in conjunction with the School Development Plan. It assists the school management on specific building issues and ensures efficient use of premises within the school budget. It liaises with Barnet LEA on capital expenditure and gives approval for capital works. This committee is responsible for general maintenance and repairs over £10,000; for implementing programmed maintenance, repair and decoration; for awarding contracts for cleaning, ground maintenance and refuse collection; for security and fire prevention; and for health & safety issues appropriate to the premises. It also takes responsibility for ensuring that the school has sufficient and valid insurance cover.

The Pupil Discipline committee meets to make final decisions on permanent pupil exclusions. They will also listen to appeals from parents. They also issue "Governor's Contracts" as a final sanction prior to permanent exclusions.

The Student Welfare committee meets to discuss issues affecting the pastoral side of school life.

 

Additional Educational Needs

Takes responsibility for liaising with the school's A.E.N. coordinator. Keeps up to date with developments and progress in this area and reports back to the Governing body.

 

Careers     

 

Mrs Benjamin

Takes responsibility for liaising with the school's Careers Advisor. Keeps up to date with developments and progress in this area and reports back to the Governing body.

 

Child Protection

Is the nominated governor responsible for child protection issues and policy.

 

Equal Opportunities

Take responsibility for liaising with the school's Equal Opportunity Co-ordinator. Ensure legal requirements are being met and report back to the Governing body.

 

Gifted & Talented

Takes responsibility for liaising with the school's ICT Co-ordinator.

 

Link Governor

Organises training for other members of the Governing body and liaises with link governors from other schools and with the LEA.

 

Outdoor Activities

Monitors the school's policy for educational, recreational and sporting visits outside the school premises and reports back to the Governing Body.

 

 

 

 

 

Maintains the PTA and Governors' Web pages and assists with press and 'media' issues relating to important events at the school as required.
